You’ll Want to Get Dirty With This Photographer

Beryl Fine is a Brooklyn, N.Y.C.-based photographer with just the kind of outsider, avant-garde, and often-pervy sensibility we can get behind. The 31-year-old has been shooting since she was 18, and has some seriously intense, absurdly awesome series under her belt. Whether she’s pointing her camera at club kids, naked ladies, bike messengers, or musicians like Reggie Watts and Wale, she captures something gritty and sweet, all at once. So we got all up in her grille and made her answer some of our prying questions.

Why and when did you get started as a photographer?

I started in freshman year of college. While huddled in the dorms (pre-Facebook years) I was noticing how everyone had all these crappy photos up of themselves/ friends doing idiotic activities, and they hung there decorating the walls like used Kleenex. I was all, “Shit I don’t want my memories to look like that!” So I took my dads old 35mm Mamiya camera, loaded ‘er up with some film and started to snap away. Soon I started to get images worthy of eternity. I didn’t really start to develop a style or a philosophy of “my work” till 22/23. That was when I got an internship in the art department at a local music magazine, XLR8R.

If your style was a movie, what movie would it be?

Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train. It’s weird, sultry, and beautifully lit.

Who are some of your personal favorite grown-ass ladies?

Patsy and Dina (from Ab Fab), Bianca Del Rio, Margaret Cho, Ilana Glazer, Sarah Silverman, and every single lady on the blog Advanced Style.

What are you obsessed with right now?

I am obsessed with Ru Paul’s Drag Race. I am seriously convinced that it’s the best show on television. It’s a beautiful combo of America’s Got Talent, Project Runway and Donahue. I have literally seen EVERY episode 2-3 times. I LOVE YOU RU!!
